How to Post to X, LinkedIn, Instagram and Threads Without Copy-Pasting

November 5, 2026 ยท 6 min read

Posting the same text to four networks is fast and usually wrong. Each platform has different limits, a different reading habit and different media rules. The better approach is to write one idea once and adapt it for each network. This guide shows what to change and how to do it quickly.

PostGP Chat showing one request turned into two drafts: a LinkedIn post with a see more cut-off and a three-part X thread, each with its own schedule time and Schedule button.
One request in Chat produced a LinkedIn post and an X thread, each with its own preview and suggested time.

Why a straight copy-paste fails

A 900-character LinkedIn post will not fit on X, which allows 280. A caption that works on Instagram, where hashtags help, reads as noise on LinkedIn. A Threads post is limited to 500 bytes, so a few emoji can push it over. Even when the text fits, the audience on each network expects something different.

Copy-pasting also hides the real failures: a post that is fine on three platforms and silently over the limit on the fourth.

Start with one idea, not one post

Decide the single point first: a result, a lesson, an announcement. Then write it in the shape each network rewards. The idea stays constant, the packaging changes.

NetworkShape that worksWhat to change
XSharp opener, short lines, a thread for depth.Cut to 280 characters per post, or split into a thread.
LinkedInA strong first line, then story or steps.Put the hook before the cut-off at about 210 characters, add paragraph breaks.
InstagramA visual with a caption that supports it.Lead with the image or video, keep hashtags within 30.
ThreadsConversational and short.Stay under 500 bytes, optionally add a topic tag.

Adapt in four steps

  1. Write the core idea in two or three plain sentences.
  2. For LinkedIn, expand it with context and a takeaway, and make sure the first line stands alone.
  3. For X and Threads, compress it. Keep the claim, drop the backstory, and use a thread on X if it needs more room.
  4. For Instagram, choose the image or video first, then write a caption that adds context rather than repeating the picture.

Let Chat draft every version at once

In PostGP's Chat you describe the idea once and ask for several platforms: for example, a LinkedIn post and an X thread about a release. The writer returns one draft per platform, each shown in that platform's own preview, so you can see the LinkedIn fold or the length of each tweet immediately.

Each draft has its own suggested time, spaced around your existing posts, and you can edit the text, save it as a draft, or schedule it from the card. The writing follows your voice templates, while the platform limits stay fixed.

Ask for the order you want in the prompt, such as LinkedIn at 9 on Tuesday and X on Wednesday morning. PostGP's four-hour spacing rule applies across platforms.

Stagger instead of firing everywhere at once

Publishing on all four networks in the same minute looks automated and is not allowed by PostGP's spacing rule, which permits one post every four hours per user. A better pattern is to lead with the platform where the idea fits best, then follow on the others later that day or the next day, with the post rewritten rather than repeated.

Check each version before you schedule

Before scheduling, look at each preview. The editor flags anything over the limit and the Schedule button stays disabled until it is fixed. That is the safety net copy-paste never gave you.

Frequently asked questions

Is it okay to post the same idea on every platform?
Yes. Different networks reach different people. Rewrite the post for each one instead of pasting it.
Can PostGP post one draft to several platforms at once?
Each post belongs to one platform and account. Chat and Compose make it quick to create one draft per platform from a single idea.
How far apart should the posts be?
PostGP requires at least four hours between any two of your posts. Many people lead with one platform and follow on the others the next day.
