How Often Should You Post on Social Media? A Sustainable Rhythm for X, LinkedIn, Instagram and Threads
November 5, 2026 ยท 5 min read
Every network has people claiming the perfect number of posts per day. None of them know your audience or your calendar. The right frequency is the highest one you can keep up with good posts for months. This guide helps you pick it and shows how spacing works in PostGP.

Start from what you can sustain
A rhythm only works if you keep it. Three good posts a week for a year beat daily posting for a month followed by silence. Start lower than you think you need, and raise it only when the current pace feels easy.
A starting point per platform
These are starting points, not rules. Habits differ by network: X and Threads reward frequent short posts, LinkedIn and Instagram reward fewer, more developed ones.
| Platform | Reasonable starting rhythm | Why |
|---|---|---|
| X | Several posts a week, up to daily | Fast-moving timeline, short posts, threads for depth. |
| Threads | A few posts a week, up to daily | Conversational, replies matter as much as posts. |
| Two to four posts a week | Posts stay visible longer and each needs real substance. | |
| Two to four feed posts a week, plus Stories or Reels | Each post needs a strong visual, which takes time. |
If you are on all four, do not multiply the effort by four. Rewrite one idea for each network and spread the versions over several days.
How PostGP's four-hour rule shapes a day
PostGP allows at most one post every four hours per user, across all your accounts. In practice that means a day has room for two posts, one in the morning and one in the late afternoon, or three if you start early and finish late.
The rule is a guard against the pattern platforms treat as spam and against rate limits. It also forces a useful discipline: if a day needs more than two posts, it probably needs a thread or a carousel instead.
Quality beats volume
Posting more only helps if each post is worth reading. A weak post wastes the slot and teaches followers to scroll past you. Before raising your frequency, ask whether your recent posts earned replies, saves or shares. If they did not, improve the posts before adding more.
Read the results before changing
- Hold a rhythm for four weeks so the results are comparable.
- Look at reach and engagement per post in each platform's analytics, not just totals.
- Raise frequency only if posts are consistently doing well, or drop a weak platform for a month to focus.
- Change one thing at a time, so you know what caused any difference.
Keep gaps from happening
Most dropped rhythms are a planning problem, not a motivation one. Batch the month in one sitting, as described in the content calendar guide, and keep a couple of drafts in reserve for the weeks when life gets in the way.
Frequently asked questions
- Can I post too much?
- Yes. Beyond the point where quality drops, extra posts reduce attention per post. PostGP's four-hour spacing keeps you from bursts.
- Does posting at the same time every day help?
- A steady rhythm helps people expect you. PostGP adds a few minutes of variation so posts do not all land exactly on the hour.
- Should I post on weekends?
- Studies suggest weekends are weakest on X, LinkedIn and Threads. Test them, but most people can skip them without harm.
