Scheduled Post Failed or Not Publishing? How to Diagnose and Fix It

November 4, 2026 · 6 min read

Most failed posts have one of four causes, and each one has a clear fix. This guide explains how PostGP decides whether to retry or give up, how to read a failure, and what to do next so that you are not left guessing.

First, find out what happened

Open the calendar and look for the post. A failed post carries a failed badge, and opening it shows the reason in plain language. In the full editor it appears in a panel titled “This post didn't publish”. That message is the fastest route to the fix, so read it before anything else.

The four kinds of failure

PostGP sorts every failure into a type, and each type is handled differently:

TypeTypical causeWhat PostGP doesWhat you do
TemporaryThe platform had an outage, a timeout or a network error.Retries automatically with a growing wait: 1 minute, 2, 4, 8, up to an hour.Usually nothing. Check back later.
Rate limitedThe platform said you've posted or requested too much.Waits until the platform says it's safe, or 15 minutes, then tries again.Nothing, unless it keeps happening. Space posts further apart.
Access problemThe connection expired, was revoked, or the password changed.Stops immediately, because retrying can't work.Reconnect the account, then retry the post.
RejectedThe platform refused the content or media.Stops immediately.Fix the post using the reason shown, then retry.

Fix an access problem

  1. Open Accounts and look for a Reconnect button next to the platform.
  2. Click Reconnect and approve access again on the platform's page.
  3. Open the failed post and click Retry now. It is queued to publish right away.

If the Reconnect button never appears but posts keep failing with an access message, disconnect the account and connect it again from scratch.

Fix a rejected post

Platforms reject posts for a small set of reasons. These are the most common ones:

  • Media in the wrong format: Instagram needs JPEG images, and Threads accepts only JPEG, PNG, MP4 and MOV.
  • A file over the limit: for example, 5 MB for images on X and 8 MB for images on Instagram and Threads.
  • A combination the platform doesn't allow, such as a video with images on X, or a document with images on LinkedIn.
  • Text over the limit once the platform's own counting is applied, such as emoji on X or Threads.

Retry a post

Open the failed post in the editor and click Retry now. It goes back into the queue and is published right away, with its previous error cleared. The in-app Chat and any assistant connected through MCP can retry it for you too.

Editing a failed post and rescheduling it for a new time works as well, and is the better option if the slot has passed.

A post won't publish at all, and it isn't marked failed

  • The account may be disconnected. Posts for a disconnected account don't publish.
  • It may be waiting out a rate limit or a retry delay. Look at its status before changing anything.
  • It may already be publishing. Posts with media, especially on Threads and Instagram, take a little longer while the platform prepares the files.

Why PostGP won't blindly republish

If a platform gives an unclear answer while PostGP is publishing, the post might have gone live or might not. Publishing again could create a duplicate, so PostGP holds it instead and shows its status. Check the platform to see whether the post appeared before you decide what to do. Until then the post can't be edited, so a second copy can't be created by accident.

Frequently asked questions

How many times does PostGP retry?
Temporary errors are retried a limited number of times with a growing delay, then the post is marked failed. Rate limits wait for the platform's reset time and get extra patience.
Will a failed post publish later on its own?
Only while retries are still running. Once a post is marked failed, it waits for you to fix and retry it.
Can a retry create a duplicate?
PostGP avoids it. Posts are claimed by a single publisher at a time, and uncertain outcomes stop automatic republishing.
